  • Aquatics

    • Shrimp/Kipper Classes
      Shrimp/Kipper (Ages 6-17mos.) A parent/child class that uses songs and games to help infants adjust to water and provides parents with water-safety skills.
    • Inia Classes
      Inia (Ages 18-24mos.) Parent/child program that continues lessons of Shrimp/Kipper class with increased emphasis on basic swim skills and water adjustment.
    • Perch Classes
      Perch (Ages 2-3yrs.) Instructors work with parent and child to introduce basic swimming skills, kicking, and breathing techniques.
    • Silly Seals Classes
      Silly Seals (Ages 2.5-4yrs.) A water adjustment class for parent and child designed to increase child’s comfort in water and to help with separation from parent. Getting face wet and kicking are just a few of the beginner level skills covered. Parents will accompany children in pool for first few lessons and are phased out of the water as child’s confidence grows. Class will ultimately be taught as a Pike Class.
    • Eel Classes
      Eel (Ages 3-5yrs.) This level is for swimmers who have completed Pike Plus or can swim 10 feet independently (no flotation). Swimmers will work to develop endurance on their front and back and be introduced to the crawl stroke (reaching arms out of water).
    • Kirby Preschool Swimming Classes
      Kirby Preschool Swimming (Ages 3-5yrs.) A great water adjustment class for the beginner who has never been in the water or prefers not to get his or her face wet. Swimmers gain confidence as they are introduced to fundamental water skills.This course is for those who are enrolled at the F.M Kirby Children's Center
    • Pike Classes
      Pike (Ages 3-5yrs.) This level is a water adjustment class for the beginner who has never been in the water or prefers not to get his or her face wet. This class will help to develop confidence as they are introduced to baskic water skills.
    • Pike Plus Classes
      Pike Plus (Ages 3-5yrs.) This level is for swimmers who are comfortable being in the water. Children will gain confidence moving through the water on their fronts and backs, ultimately swimming 10 feet independently.
    • Ray Classes
      Ray (Ages 3-5yrs.) This level is for swimmers who have completed the Eel clas or can swim 15 feet of strong front and 10 feet of back crawl. Swimmers work on front and back crawl as well as developing endurance. Rotary breathing is introduced with the front crawl.
    • Starfish Classes
      Starfish (Ages 3-5yrs.) This level is for swimmers who have completed the Ray class or are able to swim 10 yards of strong front crawl and 15 feet on their backs. Swimmers work on improving front crawl and rotary breathing as well as increased endurance.
    • Sunfish Classes
      Sunfish (3-12yrs.) This class is designed for children with special needs who need extra attention and may have difficulty working in a group setting. Instructors wil work one on one with swimmers to help them feel comfortable in the water and develop their swimming skills.
    • Guppy Classes
      Guppy (Ages 5-12yrs.) This level is for simmers who have completed Polliwog/Eel or who can swim 15ft of front crawl and back crawl. This class is desgned to build front and back crawl endurance and introduce rotary breathing.
    • Micro Minnow Classes
      Micro Minnow (Ages 5-12yrs.) This level is for swimmers who have completed Starfish or Guppy or who can swim 25yds of freestyle and backstroke. This class is designed to increase endurance for freestyle and backstroke and introduce breaststroke.
    • Polliwog Classes
      Polliwog (Ages 5-12yrs.) This level is for swimmers wtih little or no experience in the water. This class is designed to get stidents comfortable with the water and introduce the front and back crawl. Also suitable fo swimmers moving from Pike and Pike Plus.
    • Fish Classes
      Fish (Ages 6-12yrs.) This level is for swimmers who completed Minnow or who can swim 100yds of strong freestyle and backstroke with concept of breaststroke. This class will continue to work on freestyle and backstroke endurance while perfecting breaststroke and introducing butterfly.
    • Flying Fish Classes
      Flying Fish (Ages 6-12yrs.) This level is for swimmers who completed Fish or who can swim 100 yd of strong freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke. The class will continue to work on freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke endurance while perfecting butterfly.
    • Mariners Swim Team
      Mariners Swim Team - Boys and girls competitive swim teams that compete with other local YMCAs. Season runs from September through March with additional workout sessions available in spring and summer.
    • Minnow Classes
      Minnow (Ages 6-12yrs.) This level is for swimmers who have completed Micro Minnow or who can swim 50yds of freestyle and backstroke. Class works on developing freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and endurance training.
    • Progressive Swim Clinic Classes
      Swim Clinic (Ages 6-13yrs.) This program will focus on technique and modifications of racing strokes while building skills. Registration requirements: Must have completed Flying Fish or have the ability to swim 4 laps Freestyle with rotary breathing, 4 laps backstroke, 4 laps of breast stroke and basic knowledge of butterfly.

    • Water Explorer Classes
      Water Explorer (Ages 7-12yrs.) This level is for advanced non-competitive swimmers who want to work on stroke development and explore different aspects of aquatics, including water polo, aquatic games, and water fitness.
    • Teen Fitness Swimming Classes
      Teen Fitness Swimming (Ages 11-16yrs.) This level is for teens who want to stay active in the water. The class will have a swim workout while tuning up their swimming skills.
    • YMCA Lifeguarding Courses
      YMCA Lifeguarding courses (Age 15+yrs.) No refunds after course start date.
    • Adult Beginner Lessons
      Adult Beginner Lessons (Ages 16+yrs.) A beginner swim class with special emphasis on getting comfortable in the water, building confidence, and learning basic swimming skills.

    • Creative Movement Classes
      Creative Movement I (2-3yrs.) This class is a great introduction to dance arts and gives children the opportunity to move in new ways while developing fine and gross motor skills in a thematic and loosely structured class. Creative Movement II (4-5yrs.) Through movement and musical exploration, children will develop their own personal style and explore how to express themselves creatively. Class mixes dance vocabulary with locomotion development in a thematic environment that encourages children to discover that there can be more than one creative solution to a question or problem.

      Creative Movement Kirby (2-3yrs.) Class is offered exclusively for children enrolled at our F.M. Kirby Chidren's Center.       Move with Me (2-3yrs.) This parent/child class allows toddler and partner to experience the joy of creative movement and make believe together! Through free dance, music and imagination participants will discover the delight of movement while developing creativity, fine and gross motor skills as well as building confidence.
    • Singalong with Me Classes
      Singalong with Me (2-3yrs.) Children love learning through song and they learn most from their parents. Tom Sellwood will work on the foundations of singing for you and your little one teaching you the songs that the two of you will be singing together for the rest of their childhood. Tom will use nursery songs, silly songs, Disney classics and even familiar TV theme tunes to help your child sing loudly, clearly, in tune and in time. There will be movements and clapping to help develop senses of rhythm and timing too. This is about enjoying the songs and enjoying singing them.
    • Ballet Preschool Classes
      Pre-Ballet (3-4yrs.) What a wonderful way to introduce your little one to the fundamentals of classic ballet technique where they will begin their love of movement. Participants must be toilet trained. Ballet shoes required. Ballet Beginner I (4-5yrs.) (Prerequisite-Pre Ballet) This beginner level class focuses on grace, poise and the beautiful lines of classical ballet. Students will develop proper alignment, learn dance vocabulary and build self confidence while boosting concentration and an understanding of music and rhythm. Ballet shoes are required. Prima Ballerina (4-6yrs.) By invitation only - This ballet class is for the young dancer that shows an eagerness to dance, a clear body awareness and the ability to focus and concentrate.

      DanceKids I (3-4yrs.) Students are introduced to the primary styles of ballet and tap. Participants must be toilet trained. Ballet and tap shoes required.

      DanceKids I Kirby (3-4yrs.) Class is offered exclusively for children enrolled at our F.M. Kirby Children's Center. Transportation to the Family Center is provided. Children are introduced to the primary styles of ballet and tap. DanceKids II Kirby (4-5yrs.) Class is offered exclusively for children enrolled at our F.M. Kirby Children's Center. Transportation to the Family Center is provided. This class is a great introduction to the primary dance styles of ballet and tap. Ballet and tap shoes required.

      Drama for Kids (4-6yrs.) This early introduction to the art of acting will develop confidence and speaking skills. Children will use their imagination to act and explore through role playing activites and participating in acting games in an environment set for all out dramatic fun for all!

      Mini Musical Theatre (4-5yrs.) This upbeat class explores dance in the wonderful world of Musical Theatre. This is the perfect class where children who love to sing, dance and act will have fun learning jazzy, funky rhythmic dances similar to the ones seen on Broadway.
    • Mini Musical Theatre Kirby Classes
      Mini Musical Theatre Kirby (4-5yrs.) Class is offered exclusively for children enrolled at our F.M. Kirby Children's Center, transportation to the Family Center is provided. This upbeat class explores dance in the wonderful world of Musical Theatre. This is the perfect class where children who love to sing, dance and act will have fun learning jazzy, funky rhythmic dances similar to the ones seen on Broadway.
    • Ballet School Age Classes
      Ballet Combo (5-7yrs.) This is a progressive class with multiple levels that teaches classical ballet, tap and jazz. Ballet and tap shoes required. Ballet Beginner II (6-8yrs.) Building on the skills learned in Ballet Beginner I, students will learn more advanced concepts of body placement, musicality, technique and combinations of jumping, leaping and turning while promoting physical strength and agility. Ballet shoes required. Ballet I & II (8-12yrs.) This ballet class emphasizes ballet barre, center and across the floor work incorporating more challenging movement combinations. Students will develop strength, proper alignment, musicality, flexibility and confidence as they learn proper ballet technique. Ballet shoes required. Ballet III/Pre Pointe (10+yrs.) By invitation only.Students will be challenged by more advanced ballet technique and learn strengthening exercises to prepare for pointe shoes. Ballet IV/en pointe (11+yrs.) By invitation only. This class meets twice a week and will focus on advanced ballet barre and floor techniques that build strength, endurance, speed and agility for more challenging adagio, allegro and grand allegro movements. This class is for students who show strength in their ankles and feet for pointe work.
    • Choir School Age Classes
      Kids Choir (5-7yrs.) New! Students will work on the foundations of singing while focusing on fun and building confidence Tom will use great kids favorites, silly songs, Disney classics, some Broadway theatre and even familiar TV theme tunes to help your child sing loudly, clearly, in tune and in time. Students will also learn the rudiments of breathing for singing, tone, tuning and most importantly, how to really enjoy singing out. We will also start to explore harmonies and even get used to singing solo lines! Junior Broadway Song Choir (8-12yrs.) New! Students will work on the foundations of group singing. Focusing on fun and building confidence Tom will use Broadway theatre songs, movie hits and even some contemporary pop (a la Glee) to help your child sing loudly, clearly, in tune and in time. They will also learn the rudiments of breathing for singing, tone, tuning and most importantly, how to really enjoy singing out. We will also start to explore harmonies and even get used to singing solo lines. Broadway Song Choir(13+yrs.) New! Tom Sellwood will bring big Broadway chorus numbers both old and new to life (Les Mis, Little Shop of Horrors, Oklahoma, etc.) in this group singing session. Students will work on vocal technique and the rudiments of breathing for singing, tone, tuning and most importantly, how to really enjoy singing out. We will harmonise and there will be solo singing involved. Music reading is a plus but not essential.
    • Hip Hop School Age Classes
      Hip Hop I (5-7yrs.) Students will ahve fun in our exciting and energetic classes that will focus on the most popular 'cool' moves all while developing coordination, body awareness and self-esteem! Hip Hop Choreography (7-12 yrs.) Students must be currently enrolled in a Hip Hop class. This class will teach students the basic techniques of Hip Hop Choreography where they can become the Choreographer and create their own dances! Hip Hop II (7-12yrs.) Students will have fun in our exciting and energetic classes that will focus on the most popular 'cool' moves all while developing coordination, body awareness and self-esteem! Hip Hop III (10+yrs.) Class is designed to teach students more advanced dance moves to the most current music. Hip Hop Performance Troupe (By invitation only) This 30 minute choreography class is for members who are enrolled in a Hip Hop class, students will have additional performance opportunities during the year.
    • Irish Dance Classes
      Irish Dance - Beginner (5-9yrs.) Students learn the basic movement of traditional Irish Dance in a high-energy while falling in love with the rich dance heritage of Ireland! Irish Dance - Intermediate/Advanced (8-12yrs.) In this mixed-level class students will build on the skills they mastered in the beginner level class, further developing steps and moving their feet toa Celtic beat! (Instructor recommendation required)
    • Tap School Age Classes
      Tap I (5-7yrs.) This beginner level tap class will teach the tapping basics and will focus on core steps, dancers will laern to create rythmic patterns and timely beats with their feet! Tap II (8-12yrs.) Students are sure to get a work out in thsi upbear, high entergy class that will focus on the technique, rhythm and musicality of Tap. Flaps, Wins, and Paradiddle will be just some of the exciting steps learned in this class!
    • Broadway Jazz School Age Classes
      Broadway Jazz (6+yrs) This class focuses on the technique, stylization, rhythm and musicality of jazz, the key element in the development of musical theater. Students will love this theatrical style of dancing! (Jazz shoes required)
    • Musical Theatre School Age Classes
      Musical Theatre (6+yrs.) This upbeat class explores dance in the wonderful world of Musical Theatre. Thsi is the perfect class where children who love to sing, dance and act will have fun learning jazzy, funky rhythmic dances similar to the ones seen on Broadway. Musical Theatre Performance Troupe (By invitation only) Members must be enrolled in a Musical Theatre class and will have additional performance opportunities during the year.
    • Acting School Age Classes
      Acting for Kids (7+yrs.) In this exciting class students will learn how to project their voices, create characters and deliver lines through fun exercises and theatre games while at the same time developing confidence and speaking skills. Acting Skills & Improv (10+yrs) Students will focus on more advanced acting techniques, performance styles and be introduced to script writing for the stage and screen. (Students must have comleted a session of Acting for Kids or be currently enrolled in Acting for Kids class.) Improv (10+yrs.) Students will explore the fundamental principles of improvisation through exercises in agreement, commitment, spontaneity and listening. They will learn to create improvisational pieces through personal exploration, the creation of characters, scene work and group games. Whether students are destined to be a cast member of 'Whose Line Is it Anyway', 'SNL', 'The Second City' or just a well-rounded theatrical performer, this class is the place to be. Come be daring, zany, goofy, witty but most of all, ready to laugh out loud!

    • Adult Ballet Classes
      Adult Ballet (Ages 18+yrs.) This multi-level is ideal to stretch, strengthen and tone your body like no other class! Inspire your inner ballerina! Class includes ballet barre, floor work and stretching.

      Adult Tap (18+yrs.) This class is all about developing agility, rhythm and learning classic tap technique while gettign a great cardio workout.

      Toddlers & Tambourines (10mos.-2.5yrs.) In this fun parent/child class, we’ll learn about rhythm and sound while rocking out to some great tunes!

      Cook with Me (18-36mos.) Parents and children will whip up delicious treats in this fun and tasty class!
    • Discover Through Play Classes
      Discover Through Play (18-36mos) A terrific parent/child class designed for toddlers to play, learn and get messy. Children will be engaged sensory play to help them explore their surroundings.
    • Shake, Rattle & Roll Classes
      Shake, Rattle & Roll (18-36mos) In this parent/child class that is sure to get children moving, we will sing songs, tell stories and have fun.
    • Animal Alphabet Classes
      Animal Alphabet (2.5-3.5yrs) Students will learn about the letters of the alphabet while building on their fine motor skills in this class. They will focus on a few letters and animals each week and learn about sound-letter relationship as well as letter formation. A great class to get ready for kindergarten!
    • Little Builders Classes
      Little Builders (2.5-3.5yrs) This half hour class will help develop fine motor skills by building with different blocks and bricks. Students will discover all that they can build with Duplo, magnetic tiles and Legos. It is also a great class to help a child to learn to separate from a parent/caregiver.
    • Mad About Math Classes
      Mad About Math (2-3yrs) Young mathematicians will begin to learn about basic mathematical facts through crafts and stories in this fun class!
    • Ready, Set...Bye Mom! Classes
      Ready, Set, Bye Mom! (2.5-3.5yrs) This fun class allows little ones to practice independence, following directions, sharing and cleaning up. We will read a story, complete a craft and have a snack, all while learning to separate from a parent/caregiver.
    • Let's Get Messy Classes
      Let's Get Messy (3-5yrs) Children will make and play with crazy concoctions in this fun and messy class!
    • Junior Architects Classes
      Junior Architects (4-6yrs) A perfect introduction to Legos, students will learn the basics of building simple structures with Duplo and Lego®.
    • Little Lab Coats Classes
      Little Lab Coats (4-6 yrs) Young scientists will perform experiments and learn about science in a safe and fun environment!
    • Lunch Munchers Classes
      Lunch Munchers (4-6 yrs) Students will make their own lunches and eat them too! They will make new friends while playing games or creating a work of art.
    • Pre-K Kids Classes
      Pre-K Kids (4-6 yrs) In a new class format, students will meet twice a week for early learning fun! They will focus on science, math, letters and art and round out each class with a yummy snack.

      Snacks & Smocks (4-6yrs) Young chefs and artists will enjoy whipping up a wholesome snack and expressing themseves artisticly as they create and imaganitive art project.

      Adventure Lego® (5-8yrs.) Raid temples of doom, explore galaxies far far away, bring out your inner superhero and more in this great building class. We'll watch movies, read books and page through magazines to help us build everything we can imagine!
    • Cooking and Crayons Classes
      Cooking and Crayons (Ages 5-8yrs.) Children enjoy creating imaginative arts and crafts projects, while also cooking up delicious edibles such as smoothies, granola bars, muffins, and hummus.
    • Crazy Lego® Classes
      Crazy Lego® (5-8yrs) Create and build with everyone's favorite bricks! Each class will explore new themes and ways to build. Students will work on a STEM challenge each week!
    • Healthy U School Age Classes
      Healthy U (5-8yrs) Healthy U is a physical activity and nutrition education program that utilizes 'CATCH' an award-winning program designed for elementary and middle school-aged children. The nutrition education component of the program helps children make informed, healthful choices. The physical activity session will give participants the opportunity to play a variety of fun games and activities that will get their hearts pumping!
    • Crafty Kids Classes
      Crafty Kids (6-8yrs) In this dynamic arts and crafts class students will create fun and beautiful age appropriate art using clay, oil pastels and various other mediums.
    • Learning Laboratory Classes
      Learning Laboratory (6-8yrs) Through scientific experiments we'll answer age old questions like: Why do Mentos react with diet coke? How can you make a volcano at home? What is OOBLECK?
    • Musical Keyboards Classes
      Musical Keyboards (6-12yrs) Proven group format offers a fun approach to help kids learn to read music. Many different activities in each class help teach timing, finger placement, music theory and much more.
    • STEMGirls Classes
      STEMGirls (Ages 6-8yrs) Through hands-on activities, budding female scientists will explore, ask questions and solve problems. They will touch on all accepts of STEM by building, cooking and working on science experiments. This class will encourage girls to innovate and investigate in a fun environment!

      Bake Boss (7-12 yrs) Aspiring young bakers will learn the basics of measuring and preparing ingredients, kitchen safety and how to decorate their edible masterpieces in this yummy class!
    • Creative Collage
      Creative Collage (7-12 yrs.) Students will learn the basics of collage using mixed media techniques to create unique works of art. A final project and showcase will round out the session.

      Fun With Fibers (7-12yrs) Students will have fun learning different sewing techniques and a variety of stitches in this creative new class.
    • Space Wars Lego® Classes
      Space Wars Lego® (9-12yrs) This class will spend time building with Lego® to make creations based on your favorite characters from 'A Galaxy Far, Far, Away.'

      Studio Art (6-12 Grade) Calling all creative teens who love ART. Express yourself freely, while learning a variety of artistic techniques in drawing, painting, and the visual arts.

      Teen Leaders Club (Gr. 6-12) The YMCA Teen Leaders Club is part of a national teen initiative to promote the Y's Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. The Teen Leaders club develops a solid character in each individual and creates a supportive community environment, inclusive of all people. Key areas of focus include: leadership development, community service, and trips & special events.

    • Chi Universe Yoga for Super Kids Classes
      Chi Universe Yoga for Super Kids (5-7yrs.) Chi Universe is a movement to bring health, awareness, and peace to the planet in the most super 'phresh' way, offering numerous health benefits, both physical and mental, while aiming to prevent and reverse childhood obesity and associated health conditions. Easy-to-follow visual cues are beneficial for children with developmental delay and autism spectrum disorders. The Chi Flow & Phreeze Card Game aids literacy through reading, listening, and applying skills, and boosts numeracy through the addition and subtraction of Chi points when advancing to each new series. Breathing techniques encourage meditation, contemplation, and deep thinking. The Chi Universe program enriches students by advocating self-esteem, compassion, peace and non-violence, and a healthy attitude towards body and self.       Brain Skills Training to Enhance Your Quality of Life (Ages 16+yrs) The brain controls every aspect of your life and YOU can control your brain by developing new mental habits.       Gym Dandy Classes (2-3yrs.) In this class, participants will build on the basics that were introduced in Gym Toddler while adding more challenging and age appropriate play and gymnastics instruction. Must be 2 by the first class.
    • Time 2 Tumble Classes
      Time 2 Tumble (2yrs.) This 30 minute dynamic class was developed for independent toddlers to enhance their gross motor skills, muscle tone, balance, coordination, and self-confidence through important skills such as climbing, jumping, kicking, throwing, and catching. Participants do not need to be toilet trained. Parents must remain in the building.

      Jolly Jumper I (3yrs.)       Preschool Boys and Girls Gymnastics (3-4yrs.) No experience needed. This one-hour class is offered during afterschool hours as well as Saturday mornings to help accommodate parents with siblings of different ages. The Preschool Gymnastics program is designed to allow every child to develop gross motor skills while channeling abundant energy and introducing him or her to the wonderful sport of gymnastics. We provide a safe fun-filled environment where we introduce your child to basic gymnastics skills and cooperation with other children as they learn to take turns, follow directions and to listen. Intermediate class with prior experience. This is the perfect class for our older teen participants who enjoy doing gymnastics simply just for fun.       Strolling Spring (Parent/Child) Calling all new moms, parents and guardians with kids in strollers. Join us as we take a stroll around beautiful Madison every Friday morning. Children in strollers welcome! All older siblings (not of stroller age) will receive complimentary babysitting in Kids Central and access to the Zone, our newest tween area, while you are on your stroll. With a new route each week, bring your stroller, meet new friends, cathch up with those you haven't seen in a while, and get some fresh air and exercise to boot!

      Lacrosse (Gr. 1-3) Teaches the basic skills of throwing, scooping, cradling and catching through drills and lead-up games!
    • One Week School Age Sports Camps
      One Week School Age Sports Camps (Gr 1-6) Week long clinics offering a variety of sports for boys and girls.
    • Speed & Agility Training Classes
      Speed & Agility training (Gr. 1-7) Agility provides the foundation for many athletic skills like jumping, juking, rolling and dribbling. For those who play sports like football, basketball, lacrosse, tennis or soccer, speed and agility training provides the baseline athleticism necessary to refine their sport-specific skills. But speed and agility training is not exclusively for sport-specific athletes. This is also a great class where non athletes can develop their functional strength, increase core stability and improve the way they move.
    • Traveling Soccer
      Traveling Soccer - A competitive program for children 17 years old and younger. Teams play in a league against other towns in the North Jersey area.       Gators Traveling Basketball - A highly competitive program where teams (U12 and U14) compete against other YMCA’s in league play and final tournament. Try-outs held in October, season-Nov. through 1st week in March.

      Women's Self-Defense (19+yrs.) - The Madison Area YMCA is proud to offer a 4 week self-defense class for women and graduating High School senior girls this summer! Classes will be instructed by a noted self-protection expert, Chris Goedecke (47 years martial arts experience, 8th Degree Black Belt, Madison YMCA Karate teacher since 1979). Join us and learn escapes from common grips and holds, how to recognize danger and prepare for any situation. It will be particularly beneficial for college bound girls and women looking to acquire some effective self-protective tools and strategies. No prior experience necessary. Loose clothing is recommended.

    • High School Ski Club
      High School Ski Club (Gr 9-12) - Join the Y on six Friday night ski trips to Shawnee Mountain in the Poconos! Each week we'll board busses at Madison High School and travel to the mountain for a fun night of Skiing and Snowboarding. Open to Madison High School students and high school students who are Madison Area YMCA members. Price does not include lift tickets, rentals or lessons. Registration is available in person at the Madison Area YMCA Family Center.
