COVID-19 Virus Information- updated March 17

Mar 15, 2020

March 17, 2020

Dear F.M. Kirby Children’s Center families,

We continue to follow developments related to COVID-19/coronavirus and adjust as information unfolds. As you know, our mission is to provide a safe nurturing learning environment for your children.  We provide important support for working families and appreciate that you are entrusting your children to us and you rely on us for their well-being when in your absence. We take this obligation very seriously.

After careful deliberation with state and local health officials and our staff and volunteer leadership, we have made the decision to close the Madison Area YMCA’s F.M. Kirby Children’s Center effective at the close of the day Wednesday, March 18, 2020. We plan to reopen at the earliest recommended date. We are aware that this situation continues to be extremely fluid, and, as a result, our reopening plan will remain to be determined.

Our decision was made out of concern for the health and well-being of all – your children and families, as well as our teachers and administrative staff. We are mindful of the duty to support the greater good – the welfare of people in our community and beyond, especially those who are most vulnerable.

We know that during these uncertain times, familiar routines, patterns and faces, especially of trusted teachers and care givers are important for children. Our talented and committed staff are developing tools and plans for distance and continued learning for your children. We want to be able to connect with you —and for you to be able to connect with each other— virtually. Important additional information will be forthcoming.

We look forward to the time—hopefully in the near future—when we can welcome our Kirby families back to our center. We see you as our family. Just as we are an integral part of your daily lives, so are you and your children equally a part of our lives.

Until then, be safe, stay well and take care.

After careful thought and deliberation with both our staff and volunteer leadership, we have made the decision to close the Madison Area YMCA’s Family Center to the public, effective today, Monday, March 16 at 2 p.m. We plan to reopen on Monday, March 30; however, we remain mindful that this situation continues to be extremely fluid, and, as a result, that plan could change.

Additional information will be forthcoming regarding our F.M. Kirby Children’s Center operations.

We have made this decision out of concern for the health and well-being of our members, our staff and the people who walk through our doors each day. We have decided to temporarily close our Family Center in the spirit of supporting the greater good – the welfare of people in our community and beyond. We recognize and are grateful for the vital role our YMCA plays, particularly for people who need us most.

In the spirit of our mission to strengthen community, we are working on ways we can help you continue to connect with us—and to each other— virtually , as we continue to navigate this unprecedented and challenging time. We are hard at work planning to provide meaningful and engaging programming that is accessible to you via digital means, and we encourage you to monitor your email, as well as visit our website here to learn more as we develop our future plans. Download the Madison Area YMCA app and explore our in-home exercise series. Click here for the App Store and here for the Google Play Store.

We look forward to the time—hopefully in the near future—when our Family Center welcomes people of all ages to work out, to learn, to socialize, to be with friends and make new friends, and to be healthy and well. We know that our Family Center is an essential part of the fabric of our community.

Until then, stay well and take care.

Dear Members, Families and Family Center Program Participants,

As you are aware, the situation with COVID-19 continues to evolve rapidly. We want to continue to serve the community as well as we can. While we are committed to our mission to provide essential services, we also have a responsibility to protect the health and safety of families, children and our staff.

Therefore, in an effort to thoughtfully and thoroughly assess the needs of our members, community and staff, the Madison Area YMCA will cancel Family Center-based programming and services scheduled for TODAY, Monday March 16th until further notice, in the following areas:
  • Youth Sports and Enrichment programming
  • School of Performing Arts (SOPA) programming
  • Aquatics classes or lessons
  • Gymnastics programs
  • Y Ninja classes
  • Kids Central (Babysitting and Open Play)
  • Teen Center (All access)
  • Group Exercise programs after 9AM

These cancelations are in addition to those communicated on Friday and last evening. Additional announcements will be forthcoming today.

Our dedicated staff teams and program instructors are working tirelessly to develop ways to deliver programs, build community and remain connected...VIRTUALLY. It is what the YMCA stands for - strengthening community. We believe it is at times like these that we need each other more than ever. As we create and implement our plans we will communicate them with you.

Thank you for your continued support.
Be well!

Tuesday, March 11, 2020

Dear Members, Families and Program Participants,

The Madison Area YMCA continues to monitor information released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) about the COVID-19 virus (Coronavirus). Since our last communication, we continue to heighten our dedication to preventative measures to maintain the cleanest possible facilities for you, our members, families and program participants. We would like to partner with you to keep our community safe. Please keep in mind that:
  • The Madison Area YMCA serves several vulnerable groups including those with chronic medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, lung disease and older adults. If you are sick with flu-like symptoms including fever or respiratory distress such as cough and shortness of breath, we would ask that you please stay home and refrain from participating in activity at our YMCA facility.
  • The CDC has posted guidelines for those individuals who are recently returning from travel to countries with widespread on-going Coronavirus transmission. Countries that are currently listed as a Level 3 Travel Health Notice include China, Iran, Italy and South Korea. Please refrain from participating in any activities at the YMCA facility for at least a 14-day period after returning from travel to a High Risk Country.
  • For the safety and health of all members, PLEASE wipe down equipment BEFORE AND AFTER use.
  • Remember the 3 Cs:
  • COVER your cough. Cough into the crook of your elbow or into a tissue that is immediately thrown away.
  • CLEAN. Frequently wash your hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer. Washing your hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds is just as effective as using hand sanitizer.
  • CONTAIN. Stay home when you are sick until you have been free of fever for 24 hours. Keep sick children home for their own well-being and the well-being of others.
Here is an informative New York Times article entitled “Gyms and Coronavirus: What Are the Risks?” which provides good, common sense advice:
