Cycle for a Cause!

(Madison, NJ) August 28, 2015- Cycle for a Cause! The Madison Area YMCA’s LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program and Turn the Towns® Teal will hold a 2-hour spinathon on Sunday, September 27, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Y’s Family Center.

Participants may register at the Madison Area YMCA Welcome Center. All proceeds donated to the event will help support Turn the Towns Teal to fund ovarian cancer research and the Madison Area YMCA’s Annual Fund to support LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. The donation to participate is $70 for two hours or $40 for one hour. The cycling instructors are Ali Dwyer and Ann Marie Battaglia.

Turn the Towns Teal is a national campaign to promote awareness of ovarian cancer and its silent symptoms. Volunteers tie ribbons throughout town centers and distribute symptom cards during the month of September which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Turn the Towns Teal is the inspiration of Gail MacNeil of Chatham (1943-2008). This campaign goes forward in her honor.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA supports cancer survivors through its no-fee program that provides opportunities to engage in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Survivors are encouraged to come as they are, no matter what stage of wellness they are in. The Madison Area YMCA’s program began in September.

The 12-week, research-based program brings together cancer survivors and YMCA staff trained in cancer care to achieve goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; improving confidence and self-esteem; and ultimately practicing a healthy lifestyle, not only as a part of recovery but as a way of life.

The Y’s Annual Campaign is one of the ways that allows the Y to provide assistance to anyone who resides or works in Madison, Chatham and Florham Park. Support is provided based on demonstrated need, with the goal that no one be turned away from membership regardless of income or background. The Annual Campaign also helps the Y broaden its reach into initiating enriching community wellness and health-enhancing programs such as LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, the Community Mental Health Initiative, the Diabetes Prevention Program and Walk with Ease, our arthritis program.
