Madison Area YMCA Announces Winter 2016 Classes and Registration
Become a Member By January 19 to Register Online As a Member 

(Madison, NJ) January 8, 2016- Winter Session 2016 at the Madison Area YMCA begins on Monday, February 1, 2016, with a variety of new classes for all ages from parent/child through adult.  

Priority member registration begins on Tuesday, January 19, at 7:30 p.m. online or in person. Members may register online up until the start of the first week of class. Members may register in person up until the start of the third class.

Registration opens for all members of the community on Tuesday, January 26, at 7:30 p.m. in person only. Non-members are encouraged to become members before Tuesday, January 19, to have the ability to register online as a member.

Nursery Cool for 2-3 year olds will develop students’ develop their fine motor skills in this fun-filled preschool readiness class. Children will use sensory abilities to discover their surroundings in a classroom environment. Offered Tuesdays 9:45 a.m.-10:30 a.m. for 10 weeks.

In the Artistic Alphabet for 2.5-3.5 year olds, students will learn about the letters of the alphabet while working on fine motor skills. Children will focus on a few letters each week and learn about letter-sound relationship as well as letter formation. A great class for kindergarten readiness! Offered Tuesdays 10:45 a.m.-11:30 a.m. for 10 weeks.

Crazy Math for 4-6 year olds teaches young mathematicians will master basic mathematical skills through storytelling in this fun class. Offered Tuesdays 3:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. for 10 weeks.

Junior Architects for 4-6 year olds is a perfect introduction to Lego. Students will learn the basics of building simple structures with Duplo and Lego. Offered Fridays 2:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. for 10 weeks.

Little Lab Coats for 4-6 year olds, offers young scientist the opportunity to perform experiments and learn about science in a safe and fun environment. Offered Wednesdays 2:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. for 10 weeks.

Flavors of the World for 6-8 year olds is an arts and crafts class where students will create fun and beautiful age appropriate art. Offered Mondays 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. for 10 weeks.

Learning Laboratory for 6-8 year olds will answer age-old questions through scientific experiments. A smock is recommended for class. Offered Wednesdays 3:30 p.m.-4:15 p.m. for 10 weeks.

Cooking the Countries for 9-12 year olds is where young chefs will continue to expand their palates and learn cooking techniques from around the world. Offered Wednesdays 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. for 10 weeks.

Creative Baking for 9-12 year olds will focus solely on baking—making quick breads, muffins, cakes and learning how to decorate creations. Offered Tuesdays 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. for 10 weeks.

Healthy Lunch, Healthy You for 6th -8th graders will teach middle schoolers the basics of creating a healthy meal as an alternative to the cafeteria lunch. They will learn basic food preparation and create a meal that they can bring to school the following day. Offered Mondays 5:15 p.m.-6:00 p.m. for 10 weeks.

Tumble Tots is a class creative growth and development gymnastics class for 3 year olds. Tumble Tots is offered Mondays 11:15 a.m.-11:45 a.m., Tuesdays 10:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m., Thursdays 11:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m., Fridays 11:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9:15 a.m.-9:45 a.m. for 20 weeks. Children are not required to be toiler trained; parents must remain in the building.

In Kids Central, new classes include: Creepers & Crawlers provides an opportunity for parents to connect with others in the community while their children play with other children. Fit Kids Connect for 8-11 year olds allows children to enjoy video game fun with healthy competition! Offered Tuesdays 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m., Thursdays 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. and Sundays 10:00-11:00 a.m. for 10 weeks.

Super Kids Playgroup for Special Needs children is offered for toddlers through 11 years old. Join us in Kids Central for some time reserved exclusively for children with sensory processing disorders and their families. Offered Fridays and Sundays 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. on January 17 and 29; February 12 and 21; and March 6 and 18. 

Parent/child class, Singalong with Me, is designed for 2 and 3 year olds and their parents. Children love learning through song and learn most songs from their parents. Mr. Sellwood works on the foundations of singing with parent and child, teaching songs that are sung together throughout childhood. He uses nursery songs, silly songs, Disney classics and familiar TV theme tunes to help children sing loudly, clearly, in tune and in time. Movement and clapping help develop senses of rhythm and timing. This class is about enjoying the songs and singing them. Offered Thursdays 9:30 a.m.-10:15 a.m. for 20 weeks.

Little Singers, a preschool class for 4 and 5 year olds, works on the foundations of singing while focusing on fun and building confidence. Mr. Sellwood uses classic kid-favorite songs, silly songs, Disney classics and familiar TV theme tunes to help children sing loudly, clearly, in tune and in time. Movement, simple choreography and clapping help develop senses of rhythm and timing too. Students also learn the rudiments of breathing for singing, tone, tuning and most importantly, how to really enjoy singing out. Offered Thursdays 10:15 a.m.-11:15 a.m. for 20 weeks.

Kids Choir, for 6 to 8 year olds, is designed to work on the foundations of singing while focusing on fun and building confidence. Using classic kid-favorite songs, silly songs, Disney classics, Broadway theatre and familiar TV theme tunes, Mr. Sellwood helps children sing loudly, clearly, in tune and in time. Students learn the rudiments of breathing for singing, tone, tuning and most importantly, how to really enjoy singing out. Students will start to explore harmonies and sing solo lines! Offered Thursdays 4:00-5:00 p.m. for 20 weeks.

Broadway Jazz for 7-12 year olds teaches children technique, stylization, rhythm and musicality of jazz, the key element in the development of musical theater. Jazz shoes required. Offered Tuesdays 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Junior Broadway Song Choir for 9 to12 year olds works on the foundations of group singing. Focusing on fun and building confidence, Mr. Sellwood uses Broadway theatre songs, movie hits and contemporary pop such as Glee, to help children sing loudly, clearly, in tune and in time. Students learn the rudiments of breathing for singing, tone, tuning and most importantly, how to really enjoy singing out. Students also will start to explore harmonies and sing solo lines. Offered Thursdays 5:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. for 20 weeks.

The Broadway Song Choir for 13+ years old, brings big Broadway chorus numbers both old and new to life (Les Miserables, Little Shop of Horrors, Oklahoma, etc.) in this group singing session. Mr. Sellwood works with students on vocal technique and the rudiments of breathing for singing, tone, tuning and most importantly, how to really enjoy singing out. Students learn to harmonize and sing solos. The ability to read music is a plus; but, not essential. Offered Thursdays 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. for 20 weeks.

In sports, Floor Hockey class is offered Tuesdays 4:30 p.m.-5:15 p.m. for K-2 students. Children will learn the basics of the sport and play games. 

New fitness classes for adults: Enhance Fitness combines three key components of fitness- strength training, flexibility, and cardiovascular conditioning. Straps and Steel improve functional movement, core strength, and metabolism.  

The YMCA offers hundreds of specialty classes and numerous competitive team opportunities for children. Financial Assistance may be available.
